Yes, that gives the right number for the crew and fills an isolated cell. The other two celss to be filled "identically"?

Yes, Notrab, even though the number isn't correct in the case of the northern location. I don't know how many people worked at the whaling station, would probably be pretty difficult to find out...

Not sure I need to worry about the Northern Station; the number is correct and puts the crew on the boat! Still cannot fathom what to put in the two remaining cells or why?

Hello Notrab,

The same. Then read across from the second letter of 5d and last letter of 25d

Thanks PKD. I get the read across from the second letter of 5 down (although I had it in mind as a spelling with I between V and K) and the last letter of 26 down read across fits the complement. I remain stupidly puzzled by why the inserted character fits into the central cell?

Hi Notrab,

Your spelling is correct - there should be two characters in each cell

Demeter, I assume you have the jumbled item. Look up ES on wiki, somewhere in there it tells you the number. Then convert to : you'll need to fill one of the 5 cells to get the right number.

Notrab, doesn't the centre cell just signify another, smaller, complement (of the JC) ?
