I think 1A may be CLUB as this is usually entered as C in crosswords. Anyone of the same mind?

I think I would be inclined to go with clue, although I am not convinced that I am even on the right track.

Anyway, isn't it good to have ferries that deliver newspapers to the islands.

could 1ac be crux - enterc anagram = centre - = crux

OK, here goes. The clue was

Enter C for _______

In most word processing, to underline a letter or group of letters you can depress the keys Ctrl and U , so think CLU

Enter gives us "E"

And you get the underscore _______

and of course 1a is a clue !
