I know you're all asleep - 20:00 here.

Forget 40a = 42a. It's 31a = 42a.
Of course, now I can't place the raptor. Will stumble back later.

Just looked at the solution for 1956. Got it all, but never made the connection with SHAM_ROCK, Duh! Serendipity. Here, everyone wears shamrocks & rhinestones. Is that an inside joke by the Irish?

My apologies about the raptor. AJT is correct. Now that leaves the logician (grail ?) or am I out to lunch? When I Google those together I get Monty Python & I feel like the village idiot: "My head hurts!" Have reprised that character for Halloween.

Hi Zardov - no, 41 ac is straightforward - anagram of "at noontide"

Thanks AJT. Had 41a, but if "logician" is not the extra, then I'll have to go hunting again.
sudokulover's 2d brings me back to the 4d 17a problem -- duplicates. Perhaps I have 18a wrong.
Thought I had the Kettle sorted out, but when I fix one letter I get another duplicate. No wonder I hate bouillabaisse.
Yes, "My head hurts!" & I'm going to bed.

Bon nuit.

Thanks Zardoz, got those two now - I was thinking of another meaning of novel! Still need 42a and 4d and don't know which "extra" words they are connected to

4d and 17 ac are not the same, Zardov - just the first two letters. For 4 d the superfluous word is in 19 d - at least, that's what I've made it.
