This is a beautiful puzzle, but beware the following problem noted on another forum: "in my copy of The Times a column is missing from the right-hand side of the grid. Reading downwards, it should be square, bar, square 13, three squares, bar, square 24, 6 squares."

Thanks, Throck! You have saved me some proper head-scratching.

I'd really recommend this puzzle - it's not nearly as tricksy as the preamble makes it sound, and the theme is really neat. I loved it.

Good of you to put that up, Throck. I just came on to make the same warning, having had to work it out the hard way.

I'm right at the end. Have changed 9 letters to get thematic names. I am baffled by how to change the other 6.

Please help before I tear my hair out.

The verse contains 2 statements of the form "XforY" (ignoring all spaces or the lack thereof). As you did with the second instance, replace Y in the grid with X.

First line of the poem; the instruction appears twice.

Sorry but isn't the first line just T?? M?????? G????

Repeated?

I can see the names of the 3 in one of the corners to change but am still bamboozled.

Apologies for all the questions

Again, ignore spaces and "FOR" appears in that string of 15 characters. 6 letters "FOR" 6 letters.
