Oh no, I see 19a is what I thought was an abbreviation.

Thanks, Kilgore Trout and prospero. I managed to work out two of them,. but 5D and 19A and the "theme" had me stumped. Fine now.

My 16.40 post should have said take out letters 4-7 in 5d - so much for trying to be helpful! anyway the answers have been posted now ...

Before you all go, my favourite was 12ac - I had spent ages looking for the answer in a......... yes, the answer.

P.s. I saw Esau sitting on a seesaw, I saw Esau, he saw me. This was what passed for humour in a Presbyterian upbringing.

I have only just looked at this thread, having struggled to complete the grid, to see how others had done!
What held me up was 8a - I was sure it was 'contraction', which seemed appropriate to the theme and is an anagram of 'can protection' minus the PE (physical exercise, as in frolicking).
I'm still not sure I understand all the removed letters.

Has anybody managed to submit their completed puzzle? We are invited, as is usual these days, to complete the attached form, but the form doesn't appear anywhere, as far as I can see. Can anybody offer any advice?

For me, it's at the bottom of the page, although it's quite hard to see because it is a box with a scroll bar so you can't see it all at once.
I never enter the comps anyway.

I opened it by clicking on 'click here' just above the blank square that would normally 'activate Java', if The Guardian could get their act together...
I have entered, tho' still not sure I completely understand my answers according to the
'theme', as I have understood it.
