Hi, Rusty!
It is chilly here this evening...I have put on a cardigan!
But our mornings have been relatively warm, still.
And I am hearing that we may get yet more hot weather!
Now I am not wanting that!
I have been struggling with this crossword?
There are a number of clues that I cannot do....and a couple I cannot parse....
There are quite a lot of anagrams, aren't there?
And didn't we have "Avogadro" only recently?

Hello, Elle!
I don't remember "Avogadro", but my memory is not great.
They limit the anagrams to five maximum per puzzle.
I found 24a to be a right rigmarole of a clue to parse.
And I was not keen on 22a, the definition is a bit loose, for me.
Other than those minor quibbles it was an entertaining puzzle.

Amedeo Avogadro speculated that equal volumes of any gas contained the same numbers of molecules. At first sight it seems unlikely, but the size of the molecules in a gas is insignificant compared with the spaces in between them, so it transpired that he was correct.
It was a great breakthrough in working out the formula of molecules such as water - 2 volumes of hydrogen react with one volume of oxygen, hence it is H2O (assuming hydrogen and oxygen molecules each contain the same number of atoms).

Hi, Rusty!
I definitely came across "Avogadro" very recently as the answer to a clue ..... but it might well have been in an Everyman puzzle...or even the Sunday Times Cryptic.
I found the left hand-side of today's puzzle very difficult.....all five clues that I couldn't solve were in that area.
And I couldn't parse 25a: "gadget" and 17a: "I, say"
Not one of my finest efforts!
Maybe I am just tired.......she offers as an 'excuse'!

Hello, Chris!
I know who Avogadro is!
I just cannot remember in which crossword I came across him recently?

Hello, Elle!
Yes, Avogadro was maybe in another puzzle.
I only do the Times Monday to Saturday.
One a day is plenty for me!
25, "Come by" is "get", "ramble" is "gad",
"device" is "gadget".
17, The "daily" is the newspaper "I", "example" is "say" (though it would be better as "for example").
"Goodness" is the definition", "I say".
Some of the clues were a bit rambly, I think.

Hello Elle, Rusty and Chris,

I think Avogadro came up either Saturday or Sunday - My guess is
Saturday.
I only do those two every week, plus the Monthly Club Special
(well, 'attempt to do' would be more correct!)

Everyone OKay?

We are due for another long hot spell too. Selfishly I am not
complaining, but the nights will remain cool, which should help
you Elle!

not see it Rusty

Bit of useless info I suppose.... but what can you expect at this time of
the day?

Hello, Pigale!

That's it! Thus I then read all about this scientist, even though I have
anything but a scientific mind! But I always read about unknown
clue, problem being memorizing what I read of course!

Hi, Rusty!
Thank you for parsing those.......
I become very frustrated when I cannot parse a clue!
I will draw a line under the other clues that I cannot even do....enough is enough!
I will cede victory to the crossword compiler today!
Maybe I shall fare better tomorrow!
Well done on finding the "Avogadro" clue!
I can rest easy now!

Hello, Pigale!
I was just about to say that if you remembered "Avogadro", then it couldn't be in the Everyman crossword, as you do not do that one, do you?
But then I saw your later post.....and see that it was in the Sunday Cryptic!
Well remembered!
