I'm thinking maybe it is an error. 'split' is the answer for another clue in the same puzzle. 'Disunion in the Adriatic'.

Here's my son's explanation:

my guess is they'd come up with two clues for 'split' and accidentally copied one over top of the clue for 'totem'.

...the clue has been in several papers with the answer totem

thank you jazzgirl, yourself and mamya posted on what i assume was the offending thread, about 2 weeks ago i think.
it all ended rather amicably with a nighty-night and one of mamya's heart shapes, apparantly Norah disagrees.
hard to tell really, she hasn't written to me, and the whole thread just disappeared - makes me wonder who else might have been banned.

My son's explanation for Wordplay which says it posts clues from lots of popular puzzles. Mine is from Canada's Globe and Mail:

pretty sure those websites just scrape information from the crosswords that get posted online!
