Thanks for all clues. I was stuck on sports players rather than thinking of cards.

Just finished. I found this one quite hard to get started. OK thereafter, but I'd never heard of the snake, nor the clergyman (thanks for hints). Also unfamiliar with the solution to 6d used as an adjective - stoved-in being the usual form, surely?

Chambers shows stove as "broken " (past tense and past participle of stave ( to break) ; there is also "stave in " and " stave off"
I am finding the recent RT crosswords more tricky than the Times Jumbo, whereas it used to be the other way round!
