I think it is SK-TIP, this is a book by author at 30. Is the anagram Book Year? - it's all I can think of. And what does this have to do with CONDUIT?

You have a wrong letter. One O should be a D.

thanks for that. Now have anagram, and the main theme, with placement of the 8 letters. Very neat! Still don't see relevance of the order of the titles, and CONDUIT

If SKATIP is thought to be a title it is wrong There is an obscure novel by Eric Ambler. The misprint in 32 is very obscure and not, as far as I can see, confirmed by Chambers.

I now have a completed grid but am puzzled by the wordplay for the 2nd 44. The answer is obvious but the wordplay totally baffles me.

Same here. Conduit is a means of communication which partly fits the grids secret and can also refer to publishing. The order of the titles is not chronological re writing dated. Just wonder if penguin or some other house published them in that order or even a magazine. Not found links in my research.

Escuan,

2nd 44 is below = DOWN with BL(barrel) substituted for D(depth)
