1 LIKE SMOKE ("likes moke" - a moke is a donkey)

2. AT ARMS?

3. VAMOOSE (MOO or "low" in VASE)

4. VAMPLATE (protective ring on a lance; VAMP - improvise. e.g. on a piano, anagram "tale")

Couldn't fathom number 5 Jolan (very devious) as hard as I tried, but here are my efforts and thank you:

1) like smoke (takes a shine to /likes + moke/donkey)
2) at odds ( sat + odd /rum anag )
3) vamoose (vase/vessel and insert moo/low)
4) vamplate (vamp /improvise +tale anag)
5) ???????? looking forward to this one

Andy

Great clues as always- my mind was on the right wavelength today I think.

Here are my suggestions:

1. Very quickly takes a shine to donkey (4,5) LIKE SMOKE as in very quickly. Likes (takes a shine to) + Moke (donkey)

2. Sat about imbibing rum in conflict (2,4) AT ODDS- In conflict. Odd (rum) inside an anagram of sat (about is indicator)

3. Get away from place low in this vessel (7) VAMOOSE-Get away. Moo (low) in Vase (vessel)

4. Improvise tale about a guard for the hand on a lance (8) VAMPLATE- hand guard on lance. Vamp- improvise + an anagram of tale (about is indicator)

5. Wanting to have a woven fabric, I’m in Scotland (4,7) FORT WILLIAM- in Scotland. For (wanting to have) + Twill (woven fabric) + I Am (I’m)

I got as far as "like s****" (but couldn't find the right donkey) and I forgot the alternative for "low". Sigh.........
