16a works with the whole clue if you make the second half mean appearance

I posted my answer thinking it must be wrong, so it wouldn't matter! Then I realised how it works.

For me, the whole of 16A doesn't work if the second part is a verb, as it would be plural with a singular subject. I think it must be an event, a place where 16D Part 1 wouldn't 16D Part 2.

I hope that's as clear as mud and doesn't give anybody any untoward help :-)

All done, I think,and I agree with what seems to be the necessary change.

However, I'm puzzled by the reference to 25 across in conjunction with 16 across & down as mentioned by prospero (and, I think concurred with by livs)

I can't see any connection at all and can't actually parse 25 across, though it's more or less the only word that will fit. Any enlightenment, please?

not a verb - but if you take the second part of 16a in the sense it would have if it had "no" in front of it, it works as the mutually exclusive alternative to 16d

the shell of 25a are potential players according to the 16a/d dichotomy
