l am sorry to say I've not improved on
previous performances:

4. soldier (fighter)
disorderly (minus dry) drunken (anagram indicator)

But I did enjoy the challenge. Thanks John for all your
hard work. Hope that the eye treatment continues
to improve. Jg x

2 I was toying with "dip into it", but YOU NAME IT seems to be the required answer.
4 SOLDIER - subtractive anagram "disorderly - dry" (and a particularly fine example of a clue, if I may say so, jolan)

Thanks jolan for a challenging set. I look forward to seeing the answers for the others!

You name it....of course, very funny. Just 3&4 Jolan for me this week but, as always, thank you for your efforts.

Now I see that shake and batten are both synonyms for flourish, but then I don't see the "the".

Hello to Rambler and RE.

Well done Ari (glad to see the were not too easy after all). Only #1 is not the required answer. 2 to 5 are spot-on. My prejudgement is nearly always wrong. I thought #1 would be the easiest {maybe this because I am an ancient - not of the Stargate variety :) }.

I'll leave #1 until I've completed my 6-courser (unless someone has posted it while I type)

Oh, and "having kittens" might mean "getting the shakes"

(I'm going with aristo on the ideal movie heroes, from Dudley Moore and Bo Derek's "Ten")
