Just going through the entries again , back soon with the winner

What a task judging this .

The early pace was set by kiwikid's neat clue - and paul was on the same wavlength . There were some nice anagrams - richardc and fieryjack deserving a mention . Then just when it couldn't get harder to judge along come the usual suspects with their usual ingenuity a homophone from the kite and ixion & les40 making a late bid .

However nobody managed to change my mind from the superb surface reading achieved by mrw at no.11

Making rum obsolete was more than awkward for the Navy (11)

I still remember sailors complaining about it !
