6d starts with L so 5d cannot begin with L?
4d is hidden backwards in the clue, I think

Aceface - yes I think you're right about 4d.

I initially discounted an 'L' for the start of 5 down, then realized it could be llama or llano - or even lloyd, as the blurb at the bottom says there are two proper names.

Must go and eat at some stage...

Still about to go out, but would avator (old spelling) terms/teams work? Eg, Dame Black, Lord Pole, Lady Eres, etc? Never heard of them, but clutching at straws!

Yes Nikki, I've been down that road but it's all very flimsy. I'm sure we'll kick ourselves - well, I hope we will and that it's not something so obscure as to be undoable.
