I have pencilled in 'deb' at 41a (following my own theme!), which also doesnt't fit with charioteers.

Yes, aceface, I have the same letters as you for 7d and agree that 5d is possibly 'beetle' (tho' it could also be 'leetle'.

You suggest 'pole' for 13 ac. Does this mean you have solved 4d?
