I think the bar-tailed prefers much sandier places than the black-tailed. Not seen the black-tailed as far as I know.

have a true story about them
Travelled to Dublin, set off accross Eire at some ungodly hour. Stopped by a lake to have something to eat (9 am maybe), saw a flock of birds on the far side and got out binoculars to view them.
In no time at all a police car drove up and demanded to know what we were doing. "Bird Watching" "Where?" "Over there". "What are those birds?" "Bar-tailed godwits"
I have never seen a face more clearly displaying suspicion of michael extracting. "Show me"
Luckily we had the bird book open at the right page.
Didn't do to have a car with English munberpates and look through binocs in Eire in 1974.

rosalind, I often feel guilty when I'm out taking photos with binoculars hanging round my neck. I, too, carry a small bird book with me. Not been stopped yet !
