Big Dave, Matička Praha: thanks for that. I suspect you have the answer between you. To ask a silly question, are the versions in the paper and online usually the same?

The Joker: FALSE EGO would fit, but then 24/16/16/14 would be EOO. which is not good.

The versions are usually the same, but the numbers are different as they are automatically generated for the online version. In the past there have been errors in the online version.

If this puzzle allows acronyms then EOOW standing for Officer Of The Watch should fit.

Junking the L&S and printing out Big Dave's copy of the original (our was covered in Tipp-Ex) OH has found a solution. The answer (or one answer, anyway) was 'squabble'.
