Thanks for the hints - I have an answer that at least fits the definition and ties up neatly with the other jumbled answers - though I still don't understand the wordplay. Never mind. Worked out where I had gone wrong with the clash in the other answer.

Now to stare at the grid. It will probably take until the solution is published!

Wordplay for 20d is as follows:
A(for area),T(for temperature) within 'to hold in cooler'i.e immure.
For the process think numerically.Hope that helps.

Am I right in thinking that the "second six-celled sector of each row" is derived from the first six-celled sector by numerical means?

Combining the first and second sectors of each row numerically will give you a third six number sector which you should recognise from the grid. Hope that helps.

I found that combining the first six-celled sector of each row with the second six-celled sector of the previous row gave the next six-celled sector (I think !)
