It's a shortened word, technically, but usually used in this form.

I'm having flashbacks aristo to the last Harper's, when I couldn't quite get the last link with Bonham.
With this one, I can only see the word Breves with a link to sound, but no other letter will go before.

Am I being totally dense

Begins with an R. Think of a boom box or a loud car radio.

ARRGGHHH! How close was I with Adverbs, cheers aristo, I'm so glad it's finished now.
Still think I need to collect another jacket from Syzzie's special restraint clothing outlet.

Thanks guys

Sorry folks. Haven't checked the forum last couple of days. Had a bit of a computer glitch.
There was no response at first, so didn't expect this much activity.

It's rather thick now, but you seem to have figured it out.
As I've said before in another puzzle, never assume. Read the preamble 3 times, then read it again.
That's tripped me up a few times.

19 does have a B, in the centre.
23 does not. The exception.
22 construable, but not in any of my dictionaries.
34 one of the US terms. Well done, peterm! That one stumped me for a while.

Bottom line, looking at your analyses, you guys are brilliant. Wasn't as hard as I thought.
I'll post the solution in a couple of days to give everyone time.

If you wish to buy jackets:
http://sj.blacksteel.com/sell.cgi
http://www.realstraightjackets.com/

The latter shows you're in good company. (-;

Well done!

Hi all! Just back from hols. and trying hard to catch up! First, thanks to Syzygy as usual. Can you help me out just with the tip clockwise/anti-clockwise for the following, which I think I have, but am otherwise stuck: would help a lot, I hope:
3 9 17 31 34
See you later, then!

Welcome back GK, hope you enjoyed the holiday.
Just off to work but will catch up later pal, some superb clues in this Harpers from Syzzie, however, you may end up tearing your hair out towards the end like I did. Have a good day.

I feel as if I lucked out with this one; the first two interlocking clues I entered happened to be in exactly the right place, and it was a breeze from thereon in (is that an Americanism?). I agree with you, Les; some of the clues are thrilling. The shadowy peterm has noted the two best, but there are quite a few other gems; I'm rather fond of "heading off like a cat" and "dogs are plusses".
