I thought 39dn might really be a unisex clue, but annoyingly, the wordplay still eludes me.

Lionheart, think French for 44a.

As for 39 down - I've virtually come to that but can't think why!!

Thanks Wendy...1st word of 44a had me confused but I see it now :)

As for 39d, I can only see only realistic solution but must confess I'm still confused.

Well my brain is well and truly drained - 30d,34a,40d,46a and 22a all elude me, looking forward to seeing the solution, which of course will make it all so obvious. There are some right clever clogs out there!

Just 4 to go. 3d looks odd, I think I have some letters wrong. I have C?E? / E?C?T

Evening all,

I've just got on and see we have a few question marks with the clues. I haven't got time to do the explanation file yet, but feel free to send me an email with any quieries, or, if you don't mind waiting, I will get it on here after tomorrow sometime with the solution page.

I have sent emails to jws & HelenB.

I will be around until about 11.30pm tonight and then I'm gonna get some kip before tomorrow (got to be on the bus by 7am)

Have or had some of the same question marks.
Hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes, or giving too much away.

39D: first 3 letters, Latin for "of itself" though includes genders.
Last 4 in Chambers for "off", transitive verb. Add "er" for the perpetrator.

30D: anagram with a deletion, leading to what we've said about some of the clues!

34A: think Freud (** for that one)

40D: "abrasive" is a noun.

46A: anagram with a deletion, & a Google.

22A: composite, def. in Chambers.

For me:
14A: def ?
36A: angler ?

Les, hope all goes well.
