By the way, ixion, I like your "stroppy Scots chap" idea. But is this coincidence or does it fit in? If so, how? And why just the first 3 words?

Hi peterm

Looking again it must be dovies it then makes sense to have the alternates spelling April fool.

30d I have tout 31d peso and 37a steno to do that. Is that what you have?

Hi dja

At the moment, I'm leaning towards leaving the letters in, so I've gone with steno and peso, and dovies for 33ac. I'm twitchy about it though.

PS Hope you're managing to get a bit of sleep! Thankfully, those days are long behind me.

I'm totally undecided, think I'll wait and see if any clarification appears.

Hi peterm

Sleep comes and goes as you no doubt remember thank god for Easter where I can catch up a bit. All good apart from that.

Perhaps I'll tackle Mephisto at the 4am feed!

Is your baby 7 months old? I only have 6.5 months to go!

The phrase must be "April fool", surely. However I seem to have lost the first "l". Where does that feature in the clues/grid? I'm also unsure of 21a ("after removal of limits Europe modified former register"). This has to be "roup": (E)urop(e) - anag, but how does the definition fit this?
Also 22a: "Low starting point - it makes bar give attention". This seems to be "base", but how does the second part of the clue fit this?
