HOWDY FOLKS
Warmest greetings to all and Blessings on those who are poorly or heavy laden.

Quite a tricky one this week but I've finished with a little help from Chambers,Roget(not much) and old friend Serendipity. I'm also qiite chuffed to think that even you brighter sparks amongst us found some difficulty too. It's funny how the mind works: I was sitting the bus this morning,on route tomy daughter's and in vacent or in
pensive mood when the answer to 8ac came in a flash from that 'lesser'poet R,B. who uses the word in Auld Lang Syne. Check it out!
This PC of mine is begining to play up again
so I'd better close before it falls apart again.

Wee jock...

I realise I am "not your cup of tea".

But, big hugs anyway.

Hello Wee Jock
This morning, I dusted down an inherited book of the Poetical Works of Robert Burns, and sure enough, p.332 4th verse of Auld Lang Syne "We twa hae run about the braes and pou'd the ****** fine"
Most of the poetry is beyond my understanding, but the colour illustrations are beautiful.
Perhaps you could translate this line from bneath one of the pictures:
"Maggie coost her head fu' high, look'd asklent and unco skeigh" !!
Keep warm and well.

Dear Pastile and Jazzgirl

Pastile, what on gives you the idea that you are not my cup if tea, was it something I/ve said? I return your hugs and ten times(criptic)

Jazzgirl,I understand your difficulty with Burn's achaic language but often we modern scots also.DUNCAN GRAY is wonderfull couthy
poem(bETTER AS A SONG)and if performed well
can be a knockout even if you dont understand
all of the language.
'Maggie etc'=Maggie tossed her head back with a haughty gesture and a sideways glance
casting aside poor Duncan's attempts at wooing her.The besom!

Many thanks Wee Jock. Have just read Duncan Gray while having lunch.
Just noticed that p.522 falls open readily so someone must have been fond of the poem that lies there. It is not surprising - "My luve is like a red red rose"
(love is written luve)

Can anyone help me with a clue from RT 5? As everyone will have long since finished that crossword now it will not matter if you give the answer.

8Across `River boy like Big Brother?` (9)
I have -R-E-L-N-

I am also still stuck on RT6 1 Down - Tobacco tin opener and that thing about the Asian boat, otherwise finished.

Hope all our English friends are not suffering too much from the cold and snow I keep hearing about but have yet to see here.

Good morning Mondrian
It is minus 4c here. Snow coming in on Sunday.
RT 5 8 across is Orwellian
RT6 1 Down - Tobacco (first 2 letters are the symbol for tin) then another word for "not in". I am sure this will give you the slang answer for tobacco.
Keep warm and well.

hi molly
Just checking in and noticed no one has answered.
2d "Powerful machine" is the answer.
for "flower" pronounce that as water that flows in the countryside etc. First 5 letters of clue mean "heaped"
10a toboggan (4) ?u?? first 3 letters another word for haul
and 15a Museum (in Paris) plus s =slats (7)
HOpe I've not confused you.
