tonyw: Googled it, and this is one of the first things that came up- in an article about the Loch Ness monster.
Unfortunately, when researchers from the Natural History Museum examined the tracks, they determined they had been made with a dried hippo's foot, of the kind that were popularly used as umbrella stands.

so that's it then,all clear now.
The Loch Ness monster used small umbrellas.
