Can you explain the wordplay on "late", please? I must be missing something obvious as Aristo got it so quick. Geddit?

Funnily enough, I had a discussion with myself (as you do) this morning when I rewrote a clue for les40's project, because my original attempt had an anagrind, but the word which was to be rearranged was referred to by another - as in this case duck > teal> late. I'm not sure if 'proper', i.e. professional, setters would do this - usually the anagrind sits next to the letters to be mixed. What do you guys think?

I didn't think you could use an anagram of letters that aren't actually there.

That's the conclusion I came to.
