OK, but it'll have to be something I made earlier.

Hmm. No reference to anyone here was intended in the wording of the clue, so don't be afraid to have a go at it. It is now open.

Checking in. Perhaps others are conversing with the late Mandelbrot (through a licensed medium I trust). Ah, fractals. Haven't got an answer, Inquisitor. Please don't stretch me any further!

The answer is mangonel.

Chap = man

no longer with us = gone

awful end = l

Old tosser = A mangonel is a mediaeval stone throwing engine used in sieges.

Know the word. Just didn't occur to me. But then you didn't want us to think of that kind of tosser, did you? One of your little head games. No! Not the bamboo shoots!

FRANCIS: I like the word "ex-pug". Makes me think of a pet cemetery.

You're all strange, especially that DID one, how is a novice supposed to get that. I'll keep looking though and hopefully end up in the same asylum.

blue moon: I'm deeply hurt, but nonetheless pleased to hear that you've set yourself so admirable a goal. In my defense, I would like to point out that even a novice knows that did is the past tense of do, and that it "goes both ways". Those smiley faces are a little annoying, so you'll have to imagine one here.

Hmm. I strive for my clues to be perfectly fair, in a Ximenean sense, so deny all accusations that they are strange. The one posted a few posts ago is a case in point. Now if you had been talking about their author...
