8 down as entered is an islander, (I think someone said that earlier in the forum), the full clue elsewhere also hints an Italian island connection.
Your playfair is more advanced than mine, I only have four of the PL answers, still need 6 and 31.

Lumen...31 is an anag giving a muscle

6D is entered as per the subsidiary indications(Peterm, this instruction was there all along in bold type and I managed to miss it)ie an Arab in chages.

I'm stumped, so Stevem please expand on your remarks - 'The bottom line isn't ?wxyz, 20D may help' and '20D is particulalry helpful, and if rearranging some of the others gives a word, then that will help too'

I think the logic in your Post 50 is sound, ixion. I'll look again at the square later. I thought I had made some progress last night, but might have to re-think now. Happy to compare notes on coded pairs, if you think it would help.

US = TE, as ET = ?S, ie not SU as you would expect in a rectangle, therefore UTSE must form a line either across or down in the grid.

Moreover ER = T? suggests that ERSTU are in a row or a column. I don't think a row is possible.

and there's where my conundrum lies... I got as far as UT-SE being in the same line/column. But then doesn't 1 across imply that UT-DG must lie in a line too? So that's a 6-letter line! Someone please tell me where I'm wrong!

No I dont see how that follows, DG could be on the other side of the square.
Now Stevem said we couldn't guess the Title, but I think when there was a crossword of this type once before with several different kinds of clues it was called Take Your Pick or similar, so let's see if we can come up with something 4,4,6 with no repeats.
