Greetings from New England!
Welcome to Clueless, our informal weekly clue-setting competition.
The idea is to compose a cryptic clue to a given word.
The winner of the previous week’s competition both sets the word to be clued and judges the entries for the current week.
The judge’s decision is final; reasons may or may not be given at the judge’s discretion. It is customary for the judge to donate a virtual prize to the winner.
To be fair to others, please do not make any comments on entries until after the winner has been declared.
Multiple entries may be submitted and new competitors are particularly welcome!
The Clueless 28 word is: SPELUNKER (9). You may now probe your psychic nether-reaches and bring a clue to light. It occurs to me that you may wish to specify whether it’s a Down clue. I don’t know if the ground rules prohibit this (I don’t think I’ve seen it done here), but it would open up a richer field of wordplay opportunities (Across would be the “default setting”; you could use “heads west”, for example, without noting that you’re thinking horizontally). If anyone knows that this is an infraction, or objects to it, please post a comment.
Clues to be submitted by 16.30 BST tomorrow (5th Oct.) with the winner being announced soon after.
