Can anyone help an Absolute Beginner on this one who's managed only 11 in the first hour without aid?!For instance,I do not follow the explanation about pairing off:what's supposed to be so easy about that?Any assistance greatly appreciated!

Well, that was a start at least, though I happen to have only 2 whole letters so far in those 4 long answers mentioned=heavy going! How about 20d:is it DUMDUM?Is it that simple? In the meanwhile I've managed a few more longer ones.So there are only 4 pairs altogether?Could they all be either synonyms or expressions where the 2 words belong together?15a is obvious, for example, but not what it might be paired off with.and I still don't get what Doc means by (only) one of two words...Sorry to be so obtuse:I must be overlooking something that's apparent to everybody else,at least the more experienced of you!

I've just read your posting again and see I didn't cover the 'two worded' unclued light.

This is at 41a and pairs with 2d

Hope that helps.

41 Across has two words, 'paired' with 2 Down which is only one word.
The pairs are not connected in the sense that they are grouped together in any way, it's the constituents of the words that link them.

Two-thirds there! Can't get 2d/41a despite long trawl through all possibilities. Then is 1a a kind of lettuce or some kind of fish?Or does "pike"mean "mace" as outside letters?Or something stick/stock?36a marinas? But "biscuits"?3d baffles me completely as I HAVE NOT A SINGLE LETTER YET.ANY HELP AT ALL ON THE LEFT HALF WOULD BE APPRECIATED,except 4,5,11,13,19,22,32,37 down!Struggling hard...
