As for,people pouring cold water on things...my "winners" word of the week was scorned before it was even judged.Because they did not know what it meant...

That was complete rudeness. I can't even remember who complained, but it was a case of" oooh I don't know that word...winge...winge!" as if every word in a crossword has to be known.

Learning new words, I thought was the point of doing crosswords.
