Update - 42 Across just came to me, so I'm delighted with myself.

You need to apply the reasoning of the first to the second

I must be very thick today. I have almost completed this - all I've left to put in are two letters in 4 Across. I don't like/understand any of the things/words I've been considering. Am I making things too complicated for myself, is 4 Across just a simple phrase/pair of words?
PS. I'm sorry if my post is slightly cryptic, but I don't want to spoil the fun for others.

Hi morven

The letter omitted from the wordplay in several clues represents the two words in 4a.

Am halfway through - but don't understand the title "(a landmark puzzle):ID".
Will I need this to finish solving?

Not really, but it would help. The key is 4ac. It's not difficult to work out the significance of the title - there are enough clues in this thread.

Thanks, AJT - I'd tried your suggestion (using the name and using the pseudonym) and came up with nothing. I've just had another go - another failure.

Don't want to offend or upset anyone, but can I ask about 13 Across?
Batter tropical fruits in church (9)
I have a nine-letter word, which means battery (as in gunfire) and it has the standard 'ce' for church - but I can't see where the 'tropical fruits' comes in. Thanks for any thoughts.
