Thanks guys, really appreciate the help, especially how the answer is derived, here are a few more from last week I still haven't worked out even by cheating, ie using the internet :-(

Study Rod's returning bird (6)

Learner dished out money for cloth (5)
_ _ A _ _

Daughter comes in to mend broken piece left over (7)
_ _ _ _ E _ T

1st one Condor (a bird).

study = con, rod returning means rod backwards = dor.

D (for daughter) in an anagram (triggered by the word broken) of to mend.

Thanks Terry, Condor and Oddment must be correct because they intersect. But why does Study = Con ?

and that give sus another letter for the other clue : Learner dished out money for cloth (5)

_ _ A _ D , the D coming from Oddment,

Blind Monkey, just google "how to solve cryptic crosswords", there are lots of very good sites available that explain all the different meanings used.
