Hi Zardoz - Chambers gives marron as a freshwater crayfish - an Aboriginal word, and maron as an alternative spelling for camaron "a kind of freshwater crustacean similar to a crayfish"

ixion: thanks for the explanation. British terms?

teenieleek: have to get Chambers.

That's a NZ parrot. Crops up everywhere.

AJT: thanks. Using the < > buttons loses the post.

I'm writing, honest. Crazy week. Had to take a break with this.

I am ignorant on the thematic terms(I know the theme)-unless I have made a mistake I cannot even get the first one -any pointers(sorry) would be a
great help I do not want to be foiled.

AJH - they are difficult to find. Try a glossary of relevant terms, I found a couple that way and a hint, the double-hyphenated one is from r to l along the bottom.

AJH - Have you got a copy of Bradford's Crossword Solvers Dictionary". Most of them are given there - I didn't know most of them, either. Otherwise I'm sure if you googled you would find a list.

BTW - Bradford's is invaluable. I haven't had mine all that long, and already it's very tattered, as all good books should be.
