Hi Polly Dee et al,

I refused to be beaten by your conundrum and, by chance, have just found another article on mistletoe and the root system. The word which sprang off the screen was SINKER and I have just checked with the Blessed Chambers and, sure enough, it IS the correct answer.

Incidentally, if you hadn't noticed, the word 'trawled' in my previous post, was a nautical pun...

If I was a dog, my tail would be wagging furiously now!

Best wishes,

Caravaggio

Polly Dee & Mystery Gal,

When I receive effusive thanks like yours, it makes everything worthwhile. However, I'm not convinced that you can call a sport or pastime SNOBS so watch out for a further post...

Sweet dreams,

Caravaggio

Hi again Polly Dee

99. Snooty people (game/pastime S) ... maybe SNITCH AND SNATCH ? S&S were pals of Lord Snooty (The Beano). To Snatch the Snitch (a ball) in the game of Quidditch gets you 150 points (H.Potter).

OK, this may be a bit fantastic.

Best Wishes.

Oh Caravaggio!

What a sheltered life you must have led:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacks

Do you remember dabs, with cubes of chalk-like material that was a somewhat similar game?

Hi Big Dave,

Well, you live and learn! I've never heard of jacks being called that but I have heard of fivestones and, no, I can't recall having played dabs.

I did suggest that the ladies were to look out for a further post, but I didn't say from whom, so you can now wear their favour on the end of your lance...

Best wishes,

A shamefaced Caravaggio

Bah!

Snobs is so ... letter-poor.
Whereas Snitch & Snatch is so .. poetic.

Humbug, I say!
