AJT explained it but here it is again.
frank = upfront.
up = at university.
front = opening.

It's not a very good clue because of the front = opening bit which is a bit iffy. The rest of it is OK.

Mark, I looked up front in Chambers, and one of a whole load of meanings is "the side open to view" so that makes it OK. I think

Thank you Terry and AJT - it is a lot clearer now. I wondered about upfront as it obviously fitted (even without the U of tundra) but discounted it as I couldn't get the wordplay. You've both enlightened me, so thank you.

On the subject of enlightenment, I hadn't associated lit with drunk, but now realise that lit is the state of being so intoxicated (regardless of the intoxicating agent) that all the person can do is smile, so that they look lit up like a light.
