The pairing is the antonyms that begin the long downs. Everyman often does this as an alternative to rhyming pairs.

That was it. Not sure why the desert spelling is predicted.

Thoroughly enjoyed that. Some great surfaces today. I can't parse the middle word of 17a though. Any subtle hints?

It comes from “room for improvement”. As a student might have, say.

Loved today's Everyman! Very doable, loads of great clues, with 4 and 14d my favourites.

Like Phil though, I was initially bemused by 2d (my LOI) wondering, if my answer was correct, where was the homophone indicator, and what was 'caught' doing there?! However, I finally realised it was in the sense of 'catching' what someone has said, so it makes sense now. Don't think I've ever seen it as a homophone indicator before though.

Yes, fairly quick solve, until I came to a grinding halt with 18d and 22a. I managed to get 22, but any hints for 18 much appreciated.

Cheers all

Hi Philo,

18d - 3 letter "computer" + single letter "resistance" + 2 letter "working" - definition is "president" (a specific one, not a general term)

Thanks Brendan

As a fellow who shuns Apple products the first three letters never dawned on me.

Have to add that I liked 20a - that sort of clue holds me up a lot but I saw this one immediately.
