Well, that was my quickest solve in a long time. Entertaining though. FOI 1a, LOI (for some reason) 14a. COD? Some competition, but I really liked 7d. I’m not terribly satisfied with 20d - either I’m missing something or it’s both weak and dodgy.

Thanks to Brummie. I enjoyed this, lots of good clues.
Was moving along quickly but stalled out on (14, 15, 22), so solving time wound up very near Prize norm.
FOI 1d, LOI 14.

COD has to be 19. Other contenders 26, 25, 5, 15, 7, 23, 2, 9, 16 and 12, indicating a solid puzzle.

Yes, I groaned at 20 and found it a bit weak. 27 and 28 I only guessed from crossers: am familiar with 27 but 28 a new usage for me. 3 is a usage I only learned in a recent contest (probably PR or WPR) thread.

Enjoyable offering from Brummie that had some tricky wordplay but enough easier ones that allowed me to make good headway.

If you do get stuck, there is at least one long anagram in the acrosses and at least one hidden in the downs.

I too was a bit confused by 20d, especially given the last couple of letters and a word in the clue - initially made me think I was missing something.

Thought 19d was a tad risque, almost Paulinesque:-)

COD - I think I'll go for 26a as it has such a smooth surface.

Thanks to Brummie for an enjoyable Prize puzzle.

Stay safe:-)

geeker - I’m glad you agree with me re 20. 19 absolutely a contender for COD for its Pauline naughtiness.
28 is very this side of the Pond, I’d say - quite Shakespearean.

Brendan, 26 was right at the top of my COD ranking due to that smooth surface, but the Pauline 19 pipped it (as is my wont).
Compliments to Brummie on many pleasing surfaces this week.

I'm joining the consensus here - 19 and 26 were the best, and 20 was lacking. Also about average solving time for me. Geeker, I too remembered the singular form of 3 from a PR.

Only two weeks since we last saw Brummie in the prize slot and the third time this year.
Quick solve but good fun.
28a is well known for a certain drowning incident.

Darla, Geeker, well recalled, it’s PR 589 and you can thank Buddy.

You're up early Jono - can't sleep? 🥱

I've just put the answer to 28a followed by "drowning" into Google and there it is - news to me, but I suppose if you have to go there might be worse ways 😀

Exactly that Brendan!
Richard III, Act 1, Scene 4 captures the deed in question (spoiler alert!)
