prospero, ah, yes, I see that now re 14a. Not a unit of measurement much used on this side of the Atlantic!

Some neat clues, I thought. Had a smile at 24& 26a. and 1d. Stumbled over 6d., as I was trying to fit in 'sol'.

24a - Aren't there 2 possible entries for this - a foreign letter and a rarely used (but in Chambers) word for "to lessen" - in fact, the word has 4 separate definitions in Chambers.

Or have I gone wrong somewhere?

Ah, cancel that - I'd carelessly assigned it to the wrong group! 😡

No, actually I didn't so I'm still puzzled.

I believe that there is only one solution to 24a if you apply the precise modification used for all the others.

Many thanks BB, I had thought that there were 2 distinct styles of modification but, as I now see clearly, there's actually only one.

Another comment. The two characters referred to in 1d appeared in the public domain long after I left the UK (30 years ago). However, because their abbreviated names are common 3-letter combinations, they feature quite frequently in word plays.
