I'll take old time schmaltz over the modern version any day. What a joy this was (for me, at least}.

This American had to do a bit of Googling to find the thematic item from the misprints, but straightforward nonetheless. Held up briefly by picking the seemingly obvious, but wrong, misprint for the 5th letter, which gave me something quite anachronistic.

Merry Christmas to all the IQers, and to everyone else too,

what I meant was that by picking the misprint to be 6 letters prior to the one the setter intended (leaving a real word that fits the clue perfectly), I get the 1st 5 letters as a date (3 letters) and an item (2 letters) that did not exist as of that date.

If it's Peter Goldmark's invention I can see your problem buddy (but that was in '48, according to wiki).

It's the usual three-letter abb. for Australia, cycled, followed by word for admits minus first letter, def. is toddler with last letter changed.

Jogamel. check the first word.... The usual abbreviation for Australia moves letters slightly, followed by a six-letter word for admits, comes in, losing the first letter.
