Struggling a bit today. I can only see one word that fits my crossers b_f_s for 10a but cannot see how it relates to 11, can anyone put me out of my misery?

Thanks for hints Chrise. Got 14a now - misleading indeed! - never heard of the type of 11 which didn’t help.

Yes, in the 11 sense, but in terms of the double definition it means the opposite stateside...

True, justsolve, but that dd usage is sufficiently common in crosswords that it doesn't cause me (American) any problems.

24a parses as 5 (a fairly modern type of 11 which may not come to mind immediately), followed by 2 ("provided") inside 2 ("the Guardian"). If you get the last 4 letters you may be able to infer the first 5.
