There's no "Southern" in 3d, but there is "small", which doesn't have to be just one letter.

Yup I was thinking of 11A which had Southern in it.

I think the 2 letter note makes more sense since it is an alternate spelling. (Just like UT is an alternative spelling of DO lol).

Jazzgirl, I don't see how books being "ent" fits in, unless you can make "note" mean "m". I parse this as 5 letters + 2 + 1 + 2.

micky you said earlier that note was 1 M ? which would leave ent for books which doesn't make sense

Well, we will probably never know how Maskerade intended 3d to be parsed, as there are two perfectly possible ways to do it. However, I still prefer the way which doesn't need a relatively obscure alternative spelling.

Jazzgirl, no I didn't say note was M, I said it was one letter. As I also said in another post, "small" doesn't have to be one letter: try girl=5 letters, small=2, note=1, books=2. That may or may notbe what Maskerade intended, but it's how I read it.

Me is very often used instead of Mi

Good one, micky. I had parsed it with a 1-letter small and 2-letter note, but your parsing is preferable IMO.

sorry micky, crossed posts.
You are saying sm is small when mostly it is s in crosswordland.

That definitely looks like a legitimate parsing Micky so it seems there are 2 ways to arrive at the answer.
