Congrats to sudokulover!
I made a typo in 1d -- no-no :-(

As usual Doc throws in a guessing game or two.
Does 39a refer to "Black & Tans"?

Wish I hadn't looked at this thread - was happily getting there- was just looking for the chat and Blair ruined it for me cos you can't forget what you've read. Also, Zardoz can you explain the Black and Tan thing or 1dn - I've got both answers and can't see your connections, probably I'm just dozy.

Thanks ixion, that's what I've got, with an 'n' it's not a flower (or Welsh)!

Sorry. 1d referred to puzzle 1981: nonAgenarians. Had "o". Also a quibble with 1980, same position. They used "bobac" when "bobak" gives twice as many hits & is in Wikipedia. Dirty pool.

Thanks ixion. Had 3 possibilities, but I see your suggestion is a common Welsh name. Mine appears to be more Irish.

Just finished after dipping in and out through the day. I only tried this puzzle for the first time last week after reading threads about it here, and (so far), I'm thoroughly enjoying it, with (so far) a hundred per cent completion rate! I have a policy of staying out of threads about a puzzle I'm working on, so thankfully I missed Blair's spoiler.
Congratuations, sudokulover, on the prize; like you, I went down the wrong alley at 12a.

Can I ask for a hint on 1d? The word play is eluding me. If 'movement' is the definition are we in musical territory? Or is it be a medical reference?
