By the difference in the definition part and the cryptic part which describes the letters to go into the grid

Thank you Aristophanes - i have been out and was pleased to see your reply on my return. I was "almost"there with14a & 17a but don't think I'd have got 21a.
Now for another play with the rest of it!

I enjoyed this puzzle - didn't get round to starting it until today, but must admit it's taken me most of the day!
Clevertask - you must persevere with this one - it's well worth the effort!

I am down to my last one but struggling with the definition. It's 27d - I am assuming that it is TOTING, with the N dropping out. If so, how does the cryptic part work?
