Graham - let's try again with 2d. I may have misled you unintentionally when I said that the wordplay had no significance - the first word word is the french word for chicken. It was the mutton stew that I meant. I said

Hello MH. 7ac is ACPU = auxiliary computer power unit (Chambers). C is gicen as an abbreviation of colt (also CH), and I suppose "pulled" up.

Afro because it's the only word that fits - and Malian. Wordplay I'm afraid I don't know. I should say ata aguess that more than 50% of the wordplay here, and any others by Paul McKenna, I don't get.
