Hi mamya - have received my copy of the Chambers Dictionary which you kindly recommended.
It is a FABULOUS book. Thank you so much for your help and the others who answered my query.
Hopefully I shall get more of my crosswords sorted out now. I got the thumb index copy.

I was trying to explain how your "book" ends. Is it a happy or a sad ending?

In the case of a dictionary the ending must be ZZZZ

Megan, so glad you are pleased and remember to use the word wizard in conjunction with it, a good investment I feel.

PS The ending (apart from Appendices is:
Zythum, a kind of Beer made by the ancient Egyptians.

Megan, one of the (many) joys of Chambers is coming across slightly quirky, humorous definitions. Try 'eclair', 'he-man' and 'middle-aged' for starters. (Mine is the 1998 edition -- I hope they're the same in yours.)

I would like to add Megan that if ever I am asked to appear on Desert Island Discs,then my choice of book would certainly be Chambers.
I am sure this would be the choice of more than a few regulars on this forum.
