I am not bad at guessing the long answers, mainly by the words that the scansion suggests, but she worked away at the horrible little ones !

38 Locum, sub, substitute. Col = pass (a hill), so reversed (back) it's Loc+Um, sign of uncertainty.

55 Addled, in a mess. Add = give extra +LED, source of illumination .

48 Lydia, a kingdom once. It's A, in clue +Idyl(l), great place (mostly = drop the last letter).

And the kingdom in 48d is Lydia . . .
