Very lucky with this. We were asked about what is to be written under the grid in a quiz on Thursday night.

I’ve completed the grid with what must be the name at 6 down and have the three words from the shortened answers, but can’t find the four extra words or any symmetrical names! Can someone give me a nudge?

You don't need the four extra words, leave that for now!

The 'names' just need a good stare at the grid, wordsearch fashion. The 'symmetrical' bit helped me a lot.

I still can't identify the 4 missing words, despite Malone's help.

Frustrating.

Maybe I have the wrong book/film.

KT17, the most obvious one (for me) was in 10D...

Thank you Malone, again.

And yes I sailed past that. But if the other three (for which I have tired of searching) are synonymical of that three letter word in the book title I think the 'four word hint' is a weak point in an otherwise engaging puzzle.

And one which introduced me to a terrifically good wartime yarn, for which I'm very grateful!

THanks, Malone. Got it now, having gone for Darwin rather than the correct surname!

Nickp, glad you got it finished!

KT17, the four words didn't add anything to the puzzle for me, but it was a pretty harmless addition. As you'll agree, the rest of it was great!

Indeed I do Malone.

Usually EV is too difficult for this small-brained bear, or too much of a chore.

But this one was most enjoyable, memorable even.

Good afternoon, I had great hopes of finishing this Ev without having to resort to picking better brains than mine, not to be I'm afraid 1a, 7d, 29a, 32d, 30d & 41a are making my head spin, I must have something wrong with the checking clues but am blowed if I can see what. Have half the name at 6d but means not a thing and cannot come up with anything connecting what I have. Another hefty shove for this bird-brain please.
