I think the use of 'Hun' for Rangers is related to the colloquial shortening of 'Rangers' to 'Gers'. Back in the 1960s the Rangers fans used to make fun of the famine in order to mock their Catholic rivals, but just then Jock Stein was leading Celtic to 9 consecutive titles, so the Celtic fans were quick to see the irony of that, that Rangers were in a famine, and gave it back to them in no uncertain terms...The Hun(gers).

I'm sure you're right, Meursault. I'm one of the few males in the west of Scotland who doesn't give a monkey's about football, and I had always thought the term came from the play on words "Gers" for both Rangers and Germans, but I saw an online explanation giving the Irish perspective. I now suspect that may have been exported to them from Glasgow, as opposed to vice versa.
