I'm getting confused here?
What are you trying to say?
The land inhabited by giants in "Gulliver's Travels" was "Brobdingnag".

For me it's clearly an error. Since Chambers 2016 doesn't give 'brobdignagian' and the OED shows it clearly as an incorrect spelling, even in a barred puzzle 'very substantial' on its own would not be acceptable as a definition.

Surely , referring back to the book itself should be adequate indication of how the word is spelt?

Elle....the problem here is that PHI has used an acknowledged wrong spelling.

The proper spelling is Brobdingnagian, but that wouldn't have fitted in the grid, so PHI has used BROBDIGNAGIAN instead.

Which is grave mistake for any crossword setter to make !

Hi, Mikey!
Thank you for taking the trouble to explain.
I have not see the the clue, and only picked up on the spelling argument.
No wonder I couldn't understand!
