My last column, after the top S, begins R-D-NT.

Can't see why mirthful or rat fits the clue; Very well yolked, with everything inside turned yellow.

Can anyone help please?

Those aren't what I have.

I think the Red is from Naval squadron's...and the Ant?ers is from No withdrawing...
Very well yolked is in the third column.

Got the yellow at last - duh!
Just the bottom half of the first two columns to sort now.

12 across is still eluding me and would greatly help. I have --O.
Could you give me a hint please?

I'm not 100% sure how 12 A works, other than the answer is in(side) the clue.

I've just checked the definition for the answer to 12 A - it refers to a scale for chess-players, so our answer is fine!
