It did occur to me just as I posted the word that something like that might happen,but by then it was too late.

I chose the word, thinking it would be a challenge because it had several definitions, no anagrams and was hard to hide.

Definition by example Donald (Duck) hence the maybe.
Wordplay Roman Numerals. Fate = Luck, the leader with the "X" factor (multiply the 1st letter by 10 (X) , (L (50) => D (500)) Luck => Duck.
